The BoP, with 4 billion people globally, offers a huge but often neglected market opportunity. The fund focuses on Indian BoP households (predominately in rural areas) earning below $2,000 per year (approximately $5.5/day). People at the BoP need basic goods and services such as food, energy, health, education and water at affordable prices. Furthermore, they supply labour, products and services to local and global markets.
BoP markets are often poorly served, dominated by informal economy and, therefore, are relatively inefficient and uncompetitive. Due to access constraints, poor people pay higher prices for inferior goods and services than wealthier consumers do. Positive trends in credit, information technology, efficient production, distribution channels and innovative business models are increasing demand and improving market opportunities at the BoP.
